Fibromyalgia can cause chronic pain, fatigue, and heightened sensitivity to touch, making many forms of massage difficult or even uncomfortable.

However, when approached in the right way, gentle and responsive massage,in cluding sensual bodywork, may help reduce tension, improve sleep, and support relaxation of the nervous system.

While this is not a medical treatment, the insights here are based on real client experiences alongside widely recognised information about fibromyalgia. This article explores how massage may help, what to avoid, and how a more tailored approach can make a difference.

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia, also known as Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), is a chronic condition characterised by widespread muscular and skeletal pain, often combined with fatigue, sleep disturbances, and increased sensitivity to touch.

The condition can create a cycle where pain disrupts sleep, and lack of sleep further intensifies symptoms.

What Does Fibromyalgia Feel Like in the Body?

People with fibromyalgia often experience:

  • Widespread aching or burning pain

  • Tenderness to touch in specific areas

  • Ongoing fatigue, even after rest

  • Sleep disturbances and poor recovery

  • Cognitive difficulties (“fibro fog”)

  • Heightened sensitivity to touch, sound, or light

This heightened sensitivity is particularly important when considering massage, as the body can respond very differently to pressure and stimulation.

Can Massage Help Fibromyalgia?

Massage therapy can help some individuals manage fibromyalgia symptoms, particularly when the approach is gentle and adapted to the individual.

Potential benefits include:

  • Pain reduction through muscle relaxation and improved circulation

  • Improved sleep quality by calming the nervous system

  • Reduced stress and anxiety, which are known to exacerbate symptoms

  • Improved mobility where stiffness is present

  • Enhanced mood and wellbeing

However, massage is not a cure and results can vary significantly from person to person.

Why Some Massage Can Make Fibromyalgia Worse

Not all massage is suitable for fibromyalgia.

Techniques that are too deep, fast, or intense can overstimulate the nervous system and increase discomfort rather than relieve it.

Many people with fibromyalgia have heightened sensitivity to touch, meaning that even well-intentioned treatments can feel overwhelming if not carefully adapted.

This is why a slower, more responsive approach is often far more effective.

What Type of Massage Is Best for Fibromyalgia?

In most cases, a gentle, slower-paced massage is better suited than deep tissue or high-pressure techniques.

Massage Type

Suitable for Fibromyalgia?

Why

Deep tissue

❌ Not recommended

Can increase pain and sensitivity

Fast/firm massage

❌ Not recommended

Overstimulating for the nervous system

Gentle massage

✅ Recommended

Supports relaxation and comfort

Sensual massage

✅ Often beneficial

Combines relaxation, touch and hormonal response

The key is not the technique itself, but how it is adapted to the individual.

A Different Approach: Sensual Massage and the Nervous System

A more tailored approach to massage focuses on:

  • Slow, continuous movement

  • Responsive pressure based on feedback

  • Creating a sense of safety and relaxation

  • Allowing the body to settle rather than react

Sensual massage can take this further by incorporating elements of arousal, which may trigger the release of endorphins and other hormones associated with relaxation, pleasure, and temporary pain relief.

For some individuals, this combination can provide a deeper sense of release than traditional massage alone.

How Arousal and Orgasm May Help

Sexual arousal and orgasm can have both physical and psychological effects that may support symptom relief:

Physical effects:

  • Release of endorphins (natural pain relief)

  • Muscle relaxation

  • Reduced physical tension

Emotional effects:

  • Reduced stress levels

  • Improved mood

  • Increased sense of connection to the body

However, experiences vary, and what works for one person may not work for another.

Real Experience: Living with Fibromyalgia and Sensual Massage

"I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2016, a condition I knew very little about. After diagnosis, there is a lot of information to take in, but the overwhelming message was that there was no cure, and it would be a mixture of pain management techniques and lifestyle changes as the course of treatment. It took a long time for me to come to terms with this and when I found that medication alone wasn’t working, I began to research a range of different therapies in order to manage my condition.

Sensual massage was not something I had initially thought of and I had my first appointment with Jools in 2023 for different reasons than my pain management. I wanted to connect with my body and feel like myself again, after years of battling mental and physical health problems. However, after leaving my first appointment, I saw that the pain I usually felt, particularly in my neck and shoulders, had decreased significantly. At following sessions, I trusted Jools to massage my neck and shoulders more deeply, which is something I had not trusted many massage therapists with. Usually the pain is too great for me to be touched and I can only bear being massaged there for a few moments. However with Jools, I felt able to tolerate this and found the flexibility and range of motion in my neck increasing after every session. After an appointment, I also found my sleep got better. Disturbed sleep is a regular occurrence for me as part of the condition, however I’ve found a significant improvement since receiving massage.

Sensual massage has given me so much. Outside of my condition, it has increased my confidence, helped me to feel more connected to my body and has had a massively positive impact on my mental health. In conjunction with other treatments I use, I will continue my appointments with Jools as a positive and life affirming way to manage my condition. It truly has given me my power back. Elizabeth"

Important Considerations

If you are considering massage for fibromyalgia:

  • Always prioritise comfort and communication

  • Start with gentle, shorter sessions

  • Avoid “pushing through pain”

  • Work with someone willing to adapt in real time

It’s also advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new therapy.

Final Thoughts

Fibromyalgia affects everyone differently, and there is no single approach that works for all.

However, for those with sensitivity to touch, a slower, more tailored approach, including sensual massage, may offer a way to experience relief, relaxation, and reconnection with the body.
